Dec 7: Mom Ditches Kid, Literally

Tara Biller (30) is a mother. She was drunk chauffeuring her 10-year-old daughter around, weebling and wobbling so much a pizza delivery guy called the sheriff’s department. Just in time too, ’cause the mother drove the car into a ditch. The panicked kid banged on the window so Tara let the girl out—and drove away, leaving her on the roadside. The pizza delivery guy looked after the daughter while the police found the mom and busted her for DUI, driving with a suspended license and child endangerment. On the bright side, now the kid knows what to give her mom on Mother’s Day: a fifth of vodka.

1. Some of the biggest science stories of the year – Steve Novella briefly discusses Ardipithecus, Darwinius masillae, the Large Hadron Collider, water on the moon, the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and methane on Mars.

2. Scientists working on making Star Trek’s synthehol a reality - According to controversial neuropsychopharmacologist David Nutt, soon people may be drinking a non-addictive alcohol substitute that allows drinkers to experience the effects of alcohol while having the means to “switch off” those effects by taking a pill.

3. What the Illinois gobernatorial candidates think of Evolution – Wow, this is depressing. Despite no mention of religion in the question, all but one found it necessary to reference their religious views. What the hell does that have to do with accepting basic scientific facts?

Day 17: Jess & Grace are picking up steam!

GRACE did…

My friend Melissa returned from London tonight.  I was to be her “pick up at the airport and drop off at home” person.  Knowing her flight was arriving at 5:15 pm I waited by my phone for her call to tell me she had landed.  Her text came at 5:21 pm.  I sent a text back letting her know I would leave in 15 minutes (this would allow her to get through customs and get her luggage).  At 5:30 pm I received a text message telling me that I could leave NOW.

So I jumped in the car and headed to the airport.  A few miles from home, I received a text from my honey who happened to be close to the airport and offered to pick Melissa up.  I thought to myself, “That is fantastic!  Especially since I have been a bit under the weather this weekend.” (And then I thought, “Hmmmm…Melissa is supposed to be my ShiFT the World recipient….how to improvise????”

The easy answer was to drive to her house, which was only 15 minutes from where I was at and leave “It” for her.  After I dropped “It” off, I sent her a text saying, “Make sure you check your patio door when you get home. :)

So…..what was “It”?  I figured since we had a history of wine tasting together (South Beach Wine and Food Festival, Italy etc.) a bottle of wine with a note attached welcoming her home would be fitting. And after traveling since 2:30 am CST what could be more perfect than a glass of wine and a cuddle with her sweet King Charles Cavalier puppy, Leona!

Welcome Home Melissa!

Chinese and Japanese, Together Under One Roof? (aka the “No, Not Fusion… Something Else” Post)

Hunan Delight Matsuya
Chinese & Japanese Cuisine

One phone number, one address. And then there’s the matter of the handwritten sign that reads “FREE WINE” in the window.

What.

I’ve been perplexed by this little restaurant Upper East Side since I moved into the area last spring. What is this, Chinese and Japanese fusion?*

The take-away menus reveal that it’s two restaurants — Hunan Delight, a Chinese restaurant, and Matsua Japanese cuisine — cohabitating in one space. Now, that’s just gross.*

Well, except, it’s not. The food’s actually really good.

We came for the free wine, the Chinese food (after I found out Hunan Delight gets rave reviews online, to my surprise) and maybe a California roll. It’s hard to mess up a roll made of crab stick, avocado and cucumber.

What we found:

— Free wine, a glass of cheap but crisp and very drinkable white wine, per person

— One of my new favorite Chinese dishes, called Green Jade Chicken ($11.95), plump white meat pieces woked over high heat in “chef’s spicy sauce” (not really that spicy) along with matchstick-sized pieces of fresh ginger and string beans. In the heat, the sauce caramelizes into a crisp, light crust. This dish is the exact antithesis to the soggy, fatty, greasy Chinese food of styrofoam yore. It’s lovely.

— And the sushi? You can find far worse sushi in supermarkets everywhere. Entranced by the platter of Dragon Rolls the sushi chef was putting up on the counter (see below) … so we ordered one.

It turned out to be a cooked roll (I still haven’t tried the raw sushi here) — shrimp tempura and cucumber on the inside, wrapped in eel and avocado on the outside.

— Doting, attentive service, of the sort you only get at a restaurant where the proprietors are that hands on, that involved, with everything.

There was a certain activity in the restaurant the night we were there, tables being reconfigured, the sushi chef turning out dragon rolls like nobody’s business, a party of young twenty-somethings turns up with a bottle of Johnny Walker — turns out, on this particular night the restaurant was hosting a private Chinese New Year feast of epic proportions after the restaurant closed (11p). Being the last guests in the restaurant, they invited us to join … we declined.

Hunan Delight, a Chinese restaurant, and Matsuya Sushi, Japanese cuisine, share 1467 York Avenue, at 78th Street, 212-628-8161

*This opinion comes from the utmost respect for each cuisine’s ingredients, technique and cultural history — although one of these days I’d love to really study and dissect the menus, to suss out any unintended fusion that’s happening.
