DAY TWO (continued): The was followed by another that focused specifically on "grower Champagnes", this time moderated by and Pete Wasserman, an consultant and importer with , and an expert on both the wines of Burgundy and on Champagne. Grower Champagnes are those wines that are made by small producers who also grow their own grapes (as opposed to the large champagne houses like Bollinger who purchase grapes from sources far and wide).
This second session consisted mostly of winemakers and importers telling the stories of their Champagnes, which were interesting, but which I cannot do justice to here. Instead, I'll just offer my tasting notes on the wines with a little of the crucial information provided on each one.
NV Vazart-Coquart Brut Reserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, Cotes du Blanc, Champagne, France
Pale gold in the glass this wine offers bright aromas of apple.and salty sea air. In the mouth it is clean and very delicate, lenghty and drawn out like a straight road disappearing over the horizon, carrying flavors of lemon, apple, and pear into a long finish. 9
This wine is made of 100% Chardonnay (hence the Blanc de Blancs designation) that started the tasting as a point of departure and a comparison for all the Pinot-based Chardonnays to come after it. The producer, Vazart, is a very young winemaker with 15 parcels of vineyards, and he is proudly always the last wine to harvest each year. He likes his fruit ripe and his wines full bodied.
NV Camille Saves Carte Blanche Brut Premier Cru, Montagne de Reims, Champagne, France
Light blond-gold in color, this wine has a slightly muted nose of floral and stony aromas. In the mouth it offers beautiful green plum flavors and a crisp, even sharp minerality that hangs in perfect balance with the fruit flavors, in a creamy bed of the nicely textured wine. Long finish. 9
NV Fleury Carte Rouge Blanc, Cote des Bar, Champagne, France
Light blonde in the glass, this wine has an alluring nose of yeasty aromas mixed with chalk dust and marzipan. In the mouth it has gorgeous range, zipping like a firefly through flavors of tart plum, crabapple, and unripe pear. Velvety in texture with incredibly fine bubbles, the finish lasts for a long, satisfying time. 80% Pinot Noir, with the remainder being Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, all biodynamically grown. This wine is a blend of the 2003 and 2004 vintages. 9/9.5
NV Thierry Massin Brut Selection, Cotes de Bar, Champagne, France
C: Pale gold in the glass, this wine has a familiar and comforting nose of sourdough bread and cold cream. In the mouth it is smooth and downy soft, sort of like you expect those baby fur seal pups to feel under your fingers. The flavor profile includes a mix of red plum and faint orange zest elements with hints of herbs that stretch out into a pleasing length on the palate. 100% Pinot Noir with the base wine being 2004 and reserve blending wines from 2003 and 2002. 9
2002 Jacques Picard Premier Cru Blanc de Noir, Montagne de Reims, Champagne, France
Light gold in color, this wine has a nose of brioche, unripe pear and warm sun-drenched hay. In the mouth it has a particular lightness to it, especially in the front of the mouth. Ethereal flavors of lemon zest ride a creamy, slightly less acidic body that doesn't resolve into a coherent statement for me. 100% Pinot Noir. 8.5/9
NV Godme Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Noir, Montagne de Reims, Champagne France
Light yellow gold in color with a pleasant brightness to it, this wine has a rich, liqueur like nose of apple pie and mixed berries. In the mouth it is weighty and powerful with bracing minerality that contains hard-to-pin-down fruit flavors that at times even seem like alpine strawberry in a field of summer wheat. Soft and satiny with a creamy texture and fine bubbles this wine lasts for a very long time on the finish. 100% Pinot Noir with the base wine from 2004, and 40% being reserve wine from 2003 and 2001. The fruit comes from 37 acres in three different villages. 9/9.5
NV Thierry Massin Brut Rose, Champagne, France
A beautiful medium salmon oink in the glass, this wine smells of wet chalkboard, yeast, and candied orange peel. In the mouth it offers simple flavors of berries and pink grapefruit with all the cheery citrus zing that you would expect from such a flavor profile. Made, as many rose champagnes are, 85% is vinified as "white" Pinot Noir (base wine from 2004 and reserve wine from 2003) as if it were going to be a normal Champagne, and then 15% red Pinot Noir wine (from 2004 vintage) is blended in before the first bubbly fermentation begins. 8.5
DAY TWO: Hello again from McMinnville, Oregon, where I am attending the 2007 International Pinot Noir Celebration, a conference and celebration of Pinot Noir in all it's incarnations. The morning of the second day began with the repeat of a session that had been given to half of the attendees the day before. Dubbed "The Secret Life of Pinot Noir" this was pair seminars about Pinot Noir and the role it plays in Champagne.
The first hour and a half was one of the most remarkable and educational sessions I have had the pleasure of attending at any wine related conference. Led by the wisecracking and articulate duo of Rollin Soles founder and winemaker at Oregon's winery, and his friend Ghislane de Montgolfier, CEO of , this session provided an incredibly interesting and unique window into the sparkling wine and Champagne making process that one might only have experienced as part of the winemaking team at a winery that produced such wines.
Specifically, in addition to cogent, and at times passionate, explanations of the very complicated sparkling winemaking process, the seminar offered the remarkable opportunity to taste the two base wines that go into making Argyle's vintage brut sparkling wine and Bollingers Special Cuvee Champagne. In fact, Ghislane confided, we were the first and only members of the public to be able to taste this unfinished wine, which had been carefully shipped to the US in three liter bottles specially for this seminar.
I will share my notes on what these two base wines tasted like in a moment, but first I offer my best attempt to capture some of Rollin and Ghislane's commentary from the seminar.
ROLLIN (very good naturedly): The first thing I want to do is share a little history with you. We've been making sparkling wine from Pinot Noir at Argyle since 1987. For years I have been bringing my sparkling wine to the IPNC selection board asking to pour it at events, and they always turned me down, telling me that it was not red wine. 'Why don't you just call it the International RED Pinot Noir Celebration then,' I said, and usually marched off in a huff to lick my wounds.
When the board called earlier in the year and said they wanted to do a sparkling wine panel, I fell out of my chair.
GHISLANE: I want to tell you something about Champagne that you may not know. Champagne used to be a still wine. It also used to be a red wine. Yes, it's true, we used to make Pinot Noir in Champagne, but we had a little maturity problem. As you know, it is quite cool in Champagne, and we could just not get the grapes ripe. So what we did to deal with this problem? We changed from red to white, and from still to sparkling wine. And how did this help? Well you see if you are making white wine from red grapes, you have no problem of the color. The color, of course, comes from properly matured skins -- remove the need for the red color, and you no longer have the problem of concentrating that color sufficiently to make red wine.
The other problem we needed to solve was that these weak red wines that we used to make, they would not age. But maybe you do not know that carbonic gas protects wine against aging. So here we solved the problem. With sparkling wines Champagne can now age. So. You must always buy two bottles of Champagne. One to drink now, and one to save for later!
ROLLIN: As sparkling wine makers, we drink sparkling wine every day. We're practically filled with carbonic gas. You don't know it but Ghislane here is 275 years old and I'm still just a puppy at 150.
GHISLANE: You have to realize that when we harvest our Pinot Noir, we don't want to make a red wine. Forget red Pinot Noir. Making a white is very different. When the grapes come in we press very fast to "forget" the color. This kind of base wine is supposed to have a very special maturity. When harvest time comes we need less sugar and more acid. We crop early. That's why we must explain that the base wine is not really a wine. It is very strange, very acid. The real wine comes on y after when you blend the wine and you re-add sugar and the second fermentation in the bottle gives your wine a new life.
ROLLIN: Before you try this "almost" Pinot Noir I want to tell you some of the flavor profiles that we're looking for in the grapes that make it. As harvest approaches you walk out to a field with fruit that is gradually turning from greenish yellow to blue. If you taste the grapes at this point they taste grassy and acid, even bitter. Some time later, the flavor shifts to something more resembling green apple, with still a sharp acidity. And then at a certain point, perhaps just in a single day, those flavors go from that Granny Smith flavor to the very specific flavor of some other ripe apple. I haven't yet put my finger on which one yet, and then there is the barest hint of the flavor of plum, yet still with that high acid. When this plum note hits, that is the moment that the grape is ready to pick. Delay beyond this point, and the berry's flavors go rapidly to strawberry, cherry, and then blackberry in quality. So this apple plum flavor is what you look for in the grape, and it is also what you can look for when tasting my base wine. See if I got it right.
2006 Argyle Pinot Noir Base Wine, destined for Argyle Vintage Brut
Pale blonde in color, this wine has a nose of bright apple cider and warm felt -- a comforting aroma that leans towards only the barest hint of yeastiness as the wine warms. In the mouth it tastes of Fuji apples and Chinese green plums with searing acidity that puckers my mouth even thinking about it now after the fact. This acidity lingers for ages in the mouth after swallowing.
NV Bollinger Pinot Noir Reserve Base Wine, destined for Bollinger Special Cuvee
An unusual bronze-gold color in the glass, this wine has an astonishing nose of the caramel, bacon, and burnt toast of a well aged Pinot Noir. In the mouth it is bright with citrus-like acidity that electrifies flavors of red apple skin and a rich bread-like flavor that lingers in a long juicy finish. This wine is remarkable in its richness and the ghostly presence of red wine that it invokes in its weight, texture, and haunting aromas. If I were to taste it blind, it would likely completely confound me.
GHISLANE: This wine you are tasting is a wine that the public has never tasted. This is Pinot Noir from 1985. For our base wine, we keep only the best vintages as reserve in magnum. Why a magnum? This is a better size to age wine, in our opinion. That is why all the wines you will taste today are in magnum. Look at the necks of these bottles. We do not use a cap for these wines, we use a special cork for each magnum. With the Special Cuvee that this wine will become, we want to every year give you the same taste for the wine. Our blend is always part of the last harvest, part of the previous harvest, and about 7% of the old base wine in reserve. The blend we make is a balance between different years, and different terroirs. To blend Bollinger Special Cuvee we need about 35 different terroirs. Of these there are six or seven that are iconic. We always keep these separate to age. Each year, we open, by hand, between sixty and one hundred thousand magnums of this old wine you taste today to blend into the special cuvee to give it consistency.
Look at the color of this wine. It is the color of aged wine.
1985 was a difficult year in Champagne. Of course, we are peasants, so we always complain about the weather. But this was a hard year. We had what we call a black frost. When we usually speak of frost as winemakers it is usually in the Spring, when it is dangerous for the young vines. But a black frost is in the winter, when we had temperatures of 35 degrees below zero Celsius. We had about 8000 acres of vines killed by this frost. But after this winter, the year was quite good, and the wine that was made was powerful. This is a powerful wine that helps our Champagne to be the highest style.
If you take most of Champagne, they ferment their base wines in the tank for control of the fermentation, but at Bollinger we do it in the barrel. When the wine is done we then must blend the base wine. We blend around 250 base wines and I must tell you, it's quite a nightmare. Tiny differences can make a huge effect. And remember that once you blend this wine, you put it into the bottle and then there's no way to change it. When you have wine in a barrel you can put stuff in, take stuff out. With the bottle you open it up 2 years later, and you have what you have. We have to really really try to understand what we have.
So into the bottle goes the base wine and the yeast, and a very small amount of sugar [known as dosage], and during the time, the first job of the yeast is to make the bubbles. But then after a few months, the bubbles are done, but the yeast is still working, transforming proteins, making different flavors.
ROLLIN: Making sparkling wine is incredibly complicated. One of the trickiest things here is the nature of this dosage, this liqueur of wine and sugar that will feed the yeast. Even one half of a milliliter of difference in dosage per 750 milliliter bottle can change the character of a wine completely. It's that delicate.

1997 Argyle Extended Tirage "Knudsen Vineyard" Brut Sparkling Wine, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Light gold in color this wine has a nose of Golden Delicious apples and warm hay. In the mouth it is smooth with flavors of apple and pear, and a simple purity graced with small bubbles, but not a lot of complexity. The wine is dry, but the fruit flavors give it a bit of sweet character that I don't particularly care for in sparkling wine. 8/8.5
1999 Argyle "Knudsen Vineyard" Brut Sparkling Wine, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Palest gold in the glass, this wine has a pleasing nose of cold cream and other mineral aromas. In the mouth it "pops" with great acidity and a light creamy texture with very fine bubbles. The flavors of the wine are bread-like with hints of orange blossom and citrus on the finish. 8.5
NV Bollinger Special Cuvee Champagne, France
Light yellow-gold in color, this wine smells of ripe, yellow apple skin and chalk dust. In the mouth it is clean and pure in quality with a taut beautiful length that uncoils across the palate with flavors of dried Autumn leaves, bread, lemon zest, and a minerality that crackles in the corner of the mouth. Very nice finish. 9
1999 Bollinger Grand Annee Champagne, France
A light, but rich gold color in the glass, this wine has a classic nose of tart, juicy apples and warm brioche. In the mouth the first sensation is of a mousse of perfect, tiny bubbles that sit creamily and dreamily on the palate with rich flavors of Ranier cherries, green plums, and sea air, al of which linger in a beautiful finish. 9/9.5
After tasting these wines, there was an opportunity to ask questions and one very good one got asked, which was how Bollinger is capable of maintaining the consistency of the flavor of the non-vintage Champagne over time, especially when winemakers can come and go. Ghislane had a lovely answer.
GHISLANE: Ah, this is a very important question, the question of how we catch the memory of the previous wine. We have usually six people around the table to taste. For the last 67 years we have had only three winemakers, so there is some good memory. But the responsibility of the big boss (me) is ultimately to make the final decision in the blend. This is a big decision, because some years we only make one blend, one wine with all our wine. If you are in charge of the company, you need others to help out, but ultimately you have to make the final decision.
But let me tell you something else that is also very important. You know when we have the babies, we take them to be baptized. And after the priest has said his words, we take our finger, and into the Champagne we dip it, and like this, we put a drop of Champagne on the tongue. Why is this? So that they can remember what does it taste like when it is their turn to make the wine!
One of Australia's leading authorities on child health, Dr Fiona Stanley, has backed calls by Aboriginal women to ban takeaway alcohol in the K imberley town of Fitzroy Crossing.
Dr Stanley, of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, says both the State and Federal Governments have failed to deliver effective services to indigenous communities, and this time, they should listen to what Aboriginal people want.
"They know what's happening, they know the best solutions," she said.
Dr Stanley has backed calls for a year long ban on takeaway alcohol to curb domestic violence, suicide and Foetal Alcohol Syndrome among the town's children.
"I think they're probably ahead of us and they've actually realised that this is a major problem for Aboriginal children," she said.
Dr Stanley stopped short of supporting a ban in other indigenous communities, saying they would have to call for it first.

While I've not watched her show for probably 5 years, and even then it was quite rare, she did say something to the effect of "You have to name it to claim it".
So, I'm always looking for ways to name "it". "It" keeps me from having a healthy relationship from just about everyone.
Recently, I "came out" to my sister, Rayanne, about the fact that, although I was able to maintain "normalcy" on an outer level, I'm in the process of losing something, and trying to figure out what "it" is. I texted her (since that is the best way to get through to her currently) the following:

my condition is not just "in my head"--it is part of me that i cant simply shake off. i have chronic complex PTSD w delayed onset, exhibiting symptoms including depression, disassociative tendencies, fear of rejection, being easily startled, destructive behaviours, flashbacks, involuntary reaction to real or perceived stimuli, emotional numbing, avoidance, among other things. The PTSD has chemical, behavioural, psychological, conditioned, and subconscious roots. it's onset was gradual and i sensed it for a long time, but i was in denial about the symptoms i've been having for years. .
This was after several other texts back and forth, and all of these arose out of a fight I started about the fact that I felt isolated and rejected (because of a number of reasons, which I won't get into now). Bottom line, I was drunk and tired of her dismissing me. The next morning, after much drama, of course, I had texted this message:

So, earlier today, I came across a new term. I've labeled myself as experiencing depersonalization and dissociation, but DEREALIZATION has given me a whole new perspective. I am in a chronic and nearly permanent state of derealization, and have been for quite some time now. To some degree, I've been this way for probably 25 years.
I feel like as long as I contemplate my state, I can't fall into craziness, since to be mad you don't realize you are mad. So, instead, I feel like I am egocentric in order to keep as sane as possible.
Friday evening found me walking along 4th. Street in Old Louisville after dark carrying two fifths of Patrón hand bottled tequila and a handle of Bacardi. Leiz was having an early 21st birthday party at her place. Drinking, dancing, and debauchery ensued in large quantities until the wee hours of the morning. A refreshing crowd of friends both old and new combined with lots of really good tequila made for a transcendental gathering. The sun rose on a floating keg, empty liquor bottles, an unfortunately shattered guitar, and several unconscious bodies, one of which was my own.
After a groggy full day of work, during which I nearly finished Deathly Hallows (nice!), I found myself celebrating Leiz's true 21st again on Bardstown Rd after midnight. During yet another deja vú bar hopping experience I made a fatal mistake. It wasn't the first time I have forgotten to close a tab. It was however the first time I had forgotten to close a tab for which the bartender kept my plastic prerogative. So this afternoon I ventured back over to Willy's. Still tattooed by several bar brandings and looking slightly disheveled, I wandered in to find the daytime bartender.
I located a gaunt, grey-bearded fellow waving his hands dramatically behind the bar. After he finished telling a profanity laden tale about being saved by Jesus Christ to his similarly grey-bearded Sunday afternoon regulars, I inquired about my debit card. While I waited I glanced around at my now daylit surroundings. As if in a parallel reality, hundreds of previously unnoticed details popped out around me. Seeing a dark, crowded bar under the influence of choice beverages is quite the inverse of seeing it nearly empty under sunlight and sobriety.
All of the bad nights have happened because I was drunk or somebody else was.
All of them.
The worst of the worst was when my brother almost drowned. We were at lake Powell and camped for the night in a little bay that had a beach and a trail that lead to some ruins we planned to hike the next day. Maybe anyway. Some of us were lounging on the boat and there was a smore making contingent on the beach and a one couple disappeared for some quality time. We were all trashed though. There was no way not to be. We started drinking when we got up and kept at it all day, we had a commitment to getting tanked and staying that way that was both devotional and appalling . We were on vacation dammit.
It all seemed pretty harmless and relaxed. The problem was that my brother was floating around on a surf board. (Yeah it might sound like a dumb thing to have on a lake by it was heaven to just lay on it in the water and watch the canyon walls and clouds.) It was the middle of the night though and he was sometimes close enough to participate in conversation with the folks on the anchored boat, sometimes not. During a lull in the conversation I heard a tiny "help" and then nothing, then a splash, then "help again.
We all panicked and scrambled. I tried to untie the boat because I knew wasn't a strong enought swimmer to save the likes of my solid brother. Another brother just jumped in and headed toward him. Everybody else just screamed. Turns out the screaming was the best idea. Another group camped in the cove had jet skis. Thank God. The screaming woke them up and a dude hopped on one and dashed to the boys that were at least now illuminated. (Somebody pulled out the huge lamp that we all laughed at earlier because you could use the damn thing to signal passing UFOs) Swimming Brother had reached Drowning Brother but was quickly being pulled under too. The Drowning Brother is a muscle packed young man, the kind that didn't want to be wiry like the rest of the men in out family so he drank wight-gain shakes. He was sinking like a stone and almost took the bold but skinny Swimming Brother with him. But that jet ski drug them back to the beach. I can't describe the terror. Thinking about that night makes me nauseous even now.
To begin, I'd like to recount an experience I recently had on an airplane coming back from Seattle:
I was seated next to a homely teenage girl with pale skin and limp, long blond hair. I was going to ask the flight attendant to move me because I didn't want that oil slick touching my delicate shoulders in the event of turbulence, but then I noticed this young girl clenching her fists. She mainly stared straight ahead. I watch the show Intervention, so I figured she was a drug addict on the way to some rehab place in California, but then the flight attendants started to come by our aisle.
"You ok sweetie?" They would ask.
"Yes," I said, automatically assuming they meant me. But they were talking to her, and within a few visits from various flight attendants, I understood this girl was afraid of flying.
Being naturally good-looking, I wanted to reach out to her.
"Is this your first flight?" I asked her.
"Yes."
"Wow. I know a girl whose brother survived a plane crash. Her name was Berkeley, and we actually played soccer at Berkeley together. What are the odds of that?" I thought that would take her mind off her anxiety, but she just nodded absently and stared ahead.
As I was about to engage her in more storytelling, an obnoxious child seated in front of us popped up and initiated a tiresome game of "What's your name?" This child had obvious severe A.D.D.. The teenage girl answered her each time with, "My name is Renee. What's your name?"
I was about to take my own life after several rounds of "What's your name?" when the magic happened. During beverage service, the flight attendant practically insisted my seatmate have some wine to calm her nerves. "It's ok honey. I'll just give it to you," she said to her. I could tell little Rene was nervous. She kept saying, "No that's alright, I'm fine."
Finally, under my breath, and while coughing, I said, "If she doesn't want it, I'll have it." The flight attendant asked if I said anything, and I said, "What? No, I was just coughing. I'll have some orange juice."
After praying the Rosary or whatever, Renee finally accepted the wine. Halfway into her debauchery, she turned toward me and said, "I'm not 21." Then she finished her wine and accepted another mini-bottle of chardonnay from the flight attendant. I couldn't believe it.
Near the end of the flight, a more relaxed Renee looked out the window and said, "I've never seen palm trees before." Renee was kind of lit. I thought she was going to try and kiss me, but thankfully the little girl with A.D.D. crapped her pants and I put on my oxygen mask to prevent suffocation.
I thought it would be funny to assume the crash landing position as the plane was just about to touch down, but the flight attendant didn't think so, and she told me to get up. As we deboarded, Renee kept stepping on my flip-flops. I said, "Quit giving me flat tires!" but she was too sloppy to understand.

After this experience, I knew what I had to do. On my flight home yesterday afternoon, I played the part of a young girl terrified of flying.
I'd watched "To Catch A Predator" a couple nights before, so I knew how to dress like a 14 year old. I wore a stupid hat and a hooded surf sweatshirt and I put my hair in two braids. I giggled a lot and kept saying "ha ha that's funny. L-O-L" whenever someone asked me anything.
Before the flight even took off, I sold my case for free booze to anyone who was watching. I splashed some water on my face to look sweaty and pinched my cheeks to make them red. Then I kept rocking back and forth saying, "No, no, no, no, no, no." They ate it up. The flight attendants kept coming by to check on me, and each time, I told them I was really scared. Then I would throw in a "But when are you guys gonna start beverage service?" They'd look at me strangely, but it was just because they were worried about me.
My seatmate was an older Asian man. I think he was actually on "To Catch A Predator" because he kept trying to buy me drinks. But accepting drinks from him would be failing in my mission. I kept my eye on the prize and during beverage service, the flight attendant offered me something to calm my nerves. She went the wine route and offered me a choice of red or white.
I said, "Ummm, well, ummm, I don't know. I mean, I'm just a girl. Ha ha. L-O-L. Maybe, I mean I guess so. Umm, yeah maybe some wine would be good. Or how bout a vodka tonic? Or do you have any Casa Noble or Cuervo Platinum? Ha ha. L-O-L."
She looked at me strangely, but obviously she knew I was very anxious, so she just handed me a mini-bottle of red wine. I smiled sweetly and slammed that baby before she could hand me the plastic cup. With merlot stained lips, I signaled for another. She reluctantly handed me another bottle and left my aisle. I used my call button frequently throughout the flight for more wine, and after awhile I was chatty Kathy with the man next to me. I told him about my favorite parts in "Missing In Action" when Chuck Norris dreams of jumping (in slow motion) onto some Vietkong dudes while holding two grenades. Then about how Chuck Norris booby-traps a jeep and more Vietkong blow up after they fender-bender it. I love those stories, but my Asian seatmate didn't think it was funny. Whatever.
Anyhow, that's how I got free booze. I had to call a taxi when I got to the airport because I didn't want to Leeho it back to the O.C., but I was really proud of myself. And I'd like to take this time to give a shout out to Renee for inspiring me. If you're out there Renee, call me.
